The Film Producer: A Scapegoat or/and a Midwife in the Film Making Process?

Abstract

Making a new film is demanding and risky for both the film director and the film producer, who hold the two leading positions in a film project. It is commonly believed that the director is responsible for the artistic/creative part of the film, whereas the producer works with administration and finances (Bordwell and Thompson, 1997). The relationship between the director and the producer is not always unproblematic, which I noticed when doing a study on leadership and organizing dynamics in a film project (Soila-Wadman, 2003).
