Shifting Structures of Society: Business, Government, and Other Institutions in a Knowledge Age

Abstract

To appreciate the power of technology to transform society, recall the upheaval caused by the Industrial Revolution. Just two centuries ago, most nations were governed by the whim of kings, who were believed to derive their power from God. In the Western world, thought itself was carefully controlled by the Catholic Church. New technologies, economic markets, and more enlightened philosophies swept away this old feudal system, and replaced it with democratic government, corporations, labor unions, news media, global finance, and other social institutions we now take for granted. Today, something similar seems to be happening as the Technology Revolution transforms the structural foundations of society once again. A “creative destruction of social institutions” is underway.
