Abstract

Recently much has been said about the important reduction in the estimates of the number of people living with HIV/AIDS. In 2007, UNAIDS and WHO revised their estimates downward by 16 per cent compared with the estimates published in 2006 (UNAIDS 2007a). Most of the decline was due to better methods for gathering data which have yielded a more accurate understanding of the epidemic and the numbers of people affected. But there are also encouraging indications the epidemic may be levelling off since 2001 and the number of deaths due to AIDS has declined slightly over the past two years, probably due to increased access to treatment and longer survival times.
