Abstract

Countries differ enormously in the material standards of living of their citizens, and the search for the causes of these differences has been a driving force in the development of modern economics. At least since Adam Smith’s 1776 classic, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, this search has largely focused on the interplay between government policies and the workings of the market mechanism. In Smith’s own analysis and in recent literature comparing the economic performance of nations there is a heavy emphasis on the role of international trade. The present volume contains a series of papers that can be viewed as further contributions to the long-running quest for understanding how the economic success of nations is linked through government policy and the market mechanism to international trade.
