Abstract

Analysts who do not have a great deal of time at their disposal find it difficult to draw any clear-cut conclusions from the various ways in which the European and American automobile distribution landscape has been restructured since 1995. Concepts that are initially seen as unassailable truths or as forms of received wisdom are often quickly replaced by ideas that are diametrically opposed in nature. It is tempting to say that, after five years of experimentation by all the actors involved in these searches for new methods of dealing with downstream issues, we are less rather than more sure about what the future holds. Whereas in the mid-1990s it was possible to draw inferences from the economic and commercial shortcomings of the traditional configurations we were accustomed to using, our former understanding has been undermined both by a series of major changes that deviate from a direction that once seemed capable of opening up a wide range of new possibilities; and also by the problems that existing firms and new entrants have encountered during their attempts to fill this vacuum.
