Abstract

In June, 1999, some 200 people in Belgium and France began to complain of digestive illnesses apparently caused by drinking Coca-Cola products.Within days, it was alleged that bottles had been infused with defective carbon dioxide at a Coca-Cola plant in Antwerp, Belgium. Further, it was alleged cans produced in Dunkirk, France, were contaminated with a fungicide from pallets used to ship products. As a result of these allegations, government officials in Belgium, France,The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Spain issued bans or partial bans on Coca-Cola products (Holsendolph, 1999a, 1999b).
