Abstract

Taking airlines as an example, this chapter examines how companies in the aviation industry can improve their social and environmental performance in line with value creation. The industry offers the opportunity for a concentrated study of the challenges of sustainability management in the areas of transportation and logistics. On the one hand the industry is an important economic player in its own right and a catalyst for economic growth and intercultural and interregional exchanges. On the other hand, despite enormous efficiency gains the social and environmental impact of air traffic is growing and the industry faces both global and local problems.
