Abstract

The economic backwardness of Spain throughout the Modern period is a well-studied subject.2 Economic historians have identified a range of causes of this problem: cultural, historical, political, institutional, educational, economic, technological and entrepreneurial. All are inter-related, making it impossible to provide a single, satisfactory explanation for Spanish underdevelopment. Nevertheless, there is general agreement that technological backwardness is one of the most important explanatory factors, and must be studied with special attention.
