Abstract

After the end of World War II the UK automotive industry became the world’s largest exporter of vehicles. In the 1950s, however, it began to show signs of decline as the US automotive industry reestablished its dominance of the US market and German, French and other European carmakers enjoyed a marked recovery. UK car production (excluding commercial vehicles) reached a peak of 19.2 million units in 1972, but declined to below the one million mark in the early 1980s.1
