In: The Hybrid Factory in Europe

Abstract

When NEC decided to expand its semiconductor business in Europe, it chose Scotland as its base because this would enable it to derive benefits from collaboration between the new plant and sister plants operated by group companies in the area. It would also shorten the turn-around time for semiconductor production (the time between the input of silicon wafers to the despatch of finished semiconductor chips) because of the comparatively short travelling time between Scotland and its semiconductor plant in Dublin, Ireland, where the final assembly would take place.
