Abstract

In 1998 Europe became the world’s top recipient of Japanese FDI, outperforming North America for the first time since the 1970s. That Europe has remained at the top of the list since then can be seen as evidence that the importance of Europe for Japan has increased, and that Europe has strengthened its position in the world economy.
