Abstract

Part IV looked at stress from a manager’s point of view. In the authors’ experience, even seasoned managers can have difficulty in recognizing stress and are nervous about talking to employees about it. They fear opening a can of worms that they cannot handle very well. Alternatively, they stay silent because they do not think there is anything they can do about the organizational stress issues. If an employee is absent due to stress, managers often do not make contact because they fear harassing the employee or saying the wrong thing. In the words of Dr. Jenny Leeser, clinical director of occupational health for BUPA Wellness, these situations “can end up in the too- difficult box” for managers.
