Leadership Transitions

Abstract

While it should now be apparent that the different phases of an organization’s lifecycle require different leadership roles, it is important to look in more detail at how organizations transition from one phase to the next in the lifecycle, and in particular, the challenges that organizations can face in making these transitions. Indeed, these transition points often mark a danger zone in the life of an organization, and many organizations find their lifecycle terminally truncated by failing to successfully make the transition from one phase to the next. Figure 7.1 shows the three main danger points for an organization as it makes transitions through phases in the lifecycle. At each of these three points, there are specific dangers that organizations and leaders must overcome in order to avoid potentially lethal failure for the organization.
