Abstract

The final three stages in the online value chain in Figure 1.3 (p. 11) — (8) operating systems for user hardware, (9) Internet browsers and (10) software applications — can be reviewed as one entity in that, each stage being composed of companies who develop software applications for end-user hardware devices, they interface with our client directly. These companies include large technology and software entities such as Microsoft and Sun Microsystems, telecoms such as AT&T and Nippon Telephone, specialized software companies such as Intuit and Electronic Arts, Internet-oriented companies such as AOL—Time Warner (with its Netscape browser), as well as many smaller niche competitors.
