Abstract

In December 2001, after years of tortuous negotiations, the People’s Republic of China was finally welcomed into the World Trade Organization as a full member. It was a surprisingly low-key event; the world was still preoccupied with the aftermath of September’s terrorist attacks and the fighting in Afghanistan, and the signing of a trade agreement didn’t even make the inside pages of many newspapers. Nevertheless, this was an event of immense importance. Of course, many of the details of exactly how China’s economy will interact with the economies of other countries, especially those of the West, remain to be worked out. The devil is in the detail, as the saying goes, and it will be a long time before the real impact filters through.
