The Role of General Management

Abstract

Every general management plays the role of cognitive architect of the company for which it is responsible. Cognitions, knowledge, languages of action are factors that are as key for economic success as technologies, brand or cash. Observation suggests that not many CEOs or head offices are aware of their importance, and that even fewer are good at managing them. How the architect proceeds depends on the cognitive references that are diffused through the core of the company, whether they are shared or not, and whether or not they are common to the operational units and to the company itself.
