Doom and Gloom?

Abstract

A singular approach to Adam Smith’s legacy uniquely illustrates how it has become contaminated by political controversies about capitalism. The approach presents a distinctive and pessimistic interpretation of an aspect of Smith’s work by extending it from the period for which it was written to (still pending) problems associated with a period at some distance in the future, for which Smith had nothing to say.
