Abstract

Reading the lives of those Philosophers who had succumbed to the attentions of ignorant tyrants and their mobs, Smith saw the Philosopher’s mission as dear to the meaning of his life as it could get. His tutors at Balliol, wearing the awesome faces of contemptible ignorance and, believing that they were doing the work of God, pushed young Smith over the edge.
