Changes in Retail Formats in a Deregulated Environment: A Case Study

Abstract

Driven by deregulation, changes in consumer behaviour and additional developments, Japanese retailing underwent significant change during the 1990s. This chapter will analyze these changes in regard to retail formats. In doing so, it will take an approach different from that adopted for the previous periods. Developments will first be described in quantitative terms based on the latest available retail statistics. To put the quantitative developments into perspective and to incorporate qualitative developments a case study of a suburban area of Tokyo will be employed. More than the quantitative overview, this case study will show the dramatic changes that occurred within a very short time in the Japanese retail landscape and that not only affected the level and quality of competition but also the overall appearance of Japanese towns. Within this larger case, smaller cases of store development will demonstrate how companies positioned new formats during the 1990s, how existing stores had to revamp their strategies to survive and also the failure of a foreign company to enter the Japanese retail market.
