Abstract

The 1950s and 1960s saw the introduction of new retail techniques culminating in the formation of a number of new retail formats and companies that to this day play a dominant role in Japanese retailing. In the following chapter, these developments will be examined in more detail. First, the stage is set by a short overview of innovative retail activities and the state of retailing prior to the period under examination. After this, the main developments during this period are identified and then discussed in regard to a number of underlying factors such as entrepreneurial conduct, transfer of technologies and the situation in consumer and procurement markets.
