Abstract

Operations and production is the management function concerned with the design, planning, control and improvement of production and operating systems in both manufacturing and service organisations. Operations and production involves such diverse activities as process design and work; inventory planning and control; project planning and control; service operations management; and quality planning and control. Operations and production strategies encompass customer service management; manufacturing systems and processes; inventory and stock management; and, planning and distributional operations. Operational and production tools and techniques, which impinge directly on internal administrative and organisational structures, are used to facilitate the smooth day-to-day running of a business. Firms obviously depend upon the successful management of these operational and production activities to achieve their overall corporate objectives both operationally and strategically.
