Abstract

Rapid technological development in the work environment has exposed more of us to the need to work ‘with’ and ‘for’ computers at work. ‘Computer phobics’ are still found in the workplace, but a great majority of us are now required to work with computers, in some way. It has become a part of daily work practice. Advances in computer technology have created dramatic changes in the work environment and our conditions of work. New technologies and computer-aided technology describe the information and materials processing hardware and software that transform information and materials (Majchrzak and Borys, 1998). Such technologies are found in service and manufacturing sectors everywhere. Since people ‘partner’ these technologies, the potential for unique forms of stress exists in the workplace, in addition to the pressures and strains of living and working.
