Abstract

Privacy and security are moving targets. They are also knotty problems for which there are no easy solutions. When it comes to the Internet, end-to-end security is practically a contradiction in terms, because the Web is a medium developed to provide wide access to information, while security means being able to restrict access on a selective basis. In terms of security, the Internet still has major problems and, in all likelihood, it will continue to do so. Visa noted at the Year 2000 GSM conference in Cannes, France, that 50 per cent of its total fraud related to the Internet.
