Abstract

Guangdong, south China’s coastal province, became the experimental ground of China two decades ago when its central government decided to reform the economic system and open its door to foreign investors. Since then, the province has found itself in the forefront of changes in China. It was among the first to undergo major economic reforms in the drive for modernization initiated by China’s late leader Deng Xiaoping, and was one of the first two provinces, including Fujian Province, to establish Special Economic Zones (SEZs). It was also the forerunner of government reform leading to more efficient government administration and increased local autonomy. Indeed, the study of Guangdong will undoubtedly unveil many of the questions and answers relating to China’s past, present and future.
