Abstract

A coach is a strange animal. Neither a trainer, whose contract is to impart knowledge and skills, nor a counsellor, whose main domain is the personal and interpersonal. The coach who is engaged in developmental work has strayed into a ‘new’ domain. Indeed, it could be argued that the activity is a new ‘profession’ and, as such, needs to look to how it conducts itself — the ethical considerations which guide its behaviour and the standards which it should seek to apply to the activity itself.
