Thomas Robert Malthus, 1766–1834: Population and Effectual Demand

Abstract

Malthus was born in the county of Surrey, England. His father Daniel himself had literary and scientific interests. The Malthus family library is now in Jesus College, Cambridge. Notwithstanding his father’s considerable reputation, Malthus did not share many of his father’s philosophical views. In 1783, he studied briefly at the Dissenting Academy at Warrington, in the north-west of England and, later that year became a private pupil to Gilbert Wakefield, a Unitarian minister and a member of the staff of the Academy. In November 1784 Malthus entered Jesus College University of Cambridge as an undergraduate, graduating in 1788. His course of study was largely in mathematics. In 1789 he entered the Church of England, in 1791 he was ordained and in 1803 he was appointed as Rector of Walesby in Lincolnshire.
