Abstract

An operations system is a highly complex element, probably the most complex to be found in any firm. Although the BAS provides an initial simplification, each activity in the BAS is also complex in itself. Most of the distinctive knowledge held by the firm will be found and used in operations. Firms have relatively similar financial, accounting, personnel and even sales systems, using almost identical knowledge. However, the operations system, and its BAS, is unique to each company. Its activities use product, process and management knowledge which are often unique.
