Abstract

Bearing in mind the knowledge gained from literature concerning the proclivity, the desired and undesired nature of intimacy in the workplace, a two stage international study of sexuality and intimacy was pursued. First, a number of semi-structured interviews were undertaken in order to explore the intimate experiences of individuals in the workplace. Most of the Stage 1 survey participants gave their permission for the interviews to be taped on the understanding that confidentiality would be maintained. The interviews were transcribed and through categorising key themes and searching for discernable patterns in the responses of the participants, the key issues emerging were identified. Information acquired from these interviews was then used to draft a questionnaire examining the demographic profile of individuals, the culture of their organisation, the nature and level of incidence of workplace intimacy, the repercussions of intimacy and the managerial and organisational policy response to intimacy occurrence. Three pilot surveys were pursued in order to attain the necessary face validity as a prelude to conducting a full survey, namely Stage 2.
