Abstract

In the previous chapter we discussed changes regarding European policy-making and structures following the Second World War. The rationale for European integration was discussed in relation to the theoretical perspectives in terms of neo-functionalism, intergovernmentalism and Europeanization. The paradoxical nature of the ECSC and European Economic Community (EEC) were identified and the dichotomies for member states in terms of their sovereignty in relation to these institutions were analysed. Indeed the previous chapter provided an overview of events of the 1950s and 1960s in relation to theoretical frameworks. This chapter deals with discussions regarding the Single European Market (SEM) and Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) from the early 1970s to the present day (2004).
