Technological Learning in Small Firms: A Quantitative Analysis

Abstract

In this chapter we shall use the proxy variables for capability and technological learning that were introduced in Chapter 6 for a cross-section analysis of the survey data. The aims of this analysis are twofold: Firstly, we would like to find statistical support for the contention that the learning mechanisms discussed in earlier chapters do indeed contribute to the formation of capability. Secondly, we are interested in gaining more insight into the exact nature and strength of the relationship between capability and its learning determinants. This means that we want to find out more about the relative contributions of the different learning variables to a given capability variable, and also how much of the total observed cross-section variation in a given capability variable can be explained by all the learning variables taken together.
