Abstract

Thinking about time as a resource, a currency, a constraint and/or a competitor requires time. This may appear a cruel irony given the challenge many people face on a daily basis to complete a range of tasks at work, at home and across an array of other circumstances and environments. But for as long as time equates to money and is used to measure productivity and commitment, battles will continue between individuals and organisations to control the ownership of time as a resource. Selling one’s labour to the market inextricably binds the individual to the static temporal structures governing many aspects of society, including the workplace. In this way temporal competition activates the pendulum of choice and constraint, locking individuals into a spiral of seemingly endless dilemmas of finding the right type of time in the right place.
