Abstract

As a foreign investor, Japan’s performance has been extraordinary. From a situation of near total insignificance in the late 1940s, it laid claim in the late 1980s to around 17 per cent of the world’s stock of foreign direct investment (FDI). By 1989 it was the single largest current FDI source, with outflows amounting to $67 billion compared with $40 billion from the US and $35 billion from the UK [Balasubramanyam and Greenaway 1992:180].
