Abstract

Rokeach (1973, p.5) defined a value as an ‘enduring belief that a specific mode of conduct or end state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct or end state of existence’. Values provide the basis for the criteria which individuals use, both at work and in their personal lives, to determine the desirability of certain actions or motivations. Values may be considered as an expression of an individual’s needs which can evoke a strong emotion such as anger or sadness challenged or contravened. Values provide the basis of global beliefs which underpin an individual’s attitudes towards the world around them. These attitudes provide the basis of an orientation towards specific objects, situations and outcomes. Values and attitudes are the key determinants of behaviour (Jones and Garard, 1967).
