Abstract

Life for everybody working for large organisations has been made more difficult by a need to sustain performance in the face of a rapidly changing, increasingly volatile and unpredictable world. It is not unusual for an effective strategic response to new external threats to require significant changes in employee responsibilities, accompanied by revisions in organisational structure. Nohria and Berkley (1994) observed that the world is no longer constituted of stable, unitary organisations built upon rules, procedures and norms with leaders who are able to be rational, universalistic thinkers. Many organisations are now more unstable, facing greater uncertainty and are required to respond rapidly to changing circumstances.
