Abstract

Analysis of a failure to implement a strategy that was designed to improve performance often reveals that the blame can be attributed to poor leadership. Events associated with politicians’ apparent inability to reduce the scale of national deficits are seen by many observers as exemplifying this scenario. In the USA, fundamental differences in political philosophies between the Democrats and Republicans by failing to approve an increase in the nation’s deficit ceiling during the summer of 2011 almost resulted in Congress plunging the country into economic chaos. Concurrently, differing views among the leaders of eurozone countries contributed to a weakening of the euro, severely damaging confidence in the financial community which, in turn, drove up government borrowing costs.
