Bad Goods: Product Counterfeiting and Enforcement Strategies

Abstract

Product counterfeiting has grown in scope, scale and complexity in the last two decades, and now affects almost every area of manufacturing and retailing. However, the problems and issues posed by counterfeits vary greatly across different industrial sectors. This chapter illustrates the complexity of the current situation with special reference to videos and the fashion industry, and argues that the nature of the problem in each industry depends on the structure of that industry itself. Moreover, the diversity of these problems means that the enforcement of trading standards has become a complex business. Drawing on interviews with trading standards officers and others, the chapter concludes with an overview of the prospects for anticounterfeiting enforcement strategies.
