Abstract

Looked at from a certain angle, Japan's economy is an extraordinary success. Just after the war, it only accounted for 1 percent of the world’s gross national product. Now it exceeds 13 percent. Its growth has been unmatched by other advanced economies for over four decades, actually achieving 10 percent and more a year during its most vigorous period. Today, Japan is the leading producer of consumer electronics, semiconductors, steel, watches, ships, etc. and should add automobiles and computers to the list soon. Its products are admired worldwide and its exports reach every corner of the earth.
