Abstract

There has long been concern that farmers use soil resources extractively without regard for their long-run value. Over 30 years ago FAO staff warned that ‘Shifting cultivation in the humid tropical countries is the greatest obstacle not only to the immediate increase of agricultural production, but also to the conservation of production potential of the future, in the form of soils and forests’ (FAO, 1957).
