Abstract

A few recent articles dealing explicitly with altruism or altruistically-related economic issues have been selected here for investigation (and are listed in Sect. 3.1). The purpose of the present analysis is twofold. The first and preliminary aim is to review formally the two most common ways in which altruism is accounted for or modelled in current economic works, emphasizing both their underlying assumptions about the nature of altruism, and the link between the implicit premises and the conclusions drawn, that is the implications of the assumptions made and models used for the results obtained by the authors (Sect. 3.2). The second and more specific aim is to highlight, by focusing on the articles selected, three distinct aspects of the altruism debate, in an attempt to evaluate how altruism ‘performs’ in the literature (Sects. 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5).
