Negotiated Reality: The Meaning of Empowerment

Abstract

In this chapter four different perspectives on empowerment are identified, the participative, the organisational, the critical and the differentiated. The perspective adopted here is based on the meaning of empowerment as constructed and enacted by those most affected — the ‘empowered’ employees themselves. The research is taken from case study material at Technon (a pseudonym), where empowerment practices have been in place for some time. We take an analytical approach focusing on the perspective of the individual, which fits in with what we term the ‘differentiated’ approach.
