Accounting in the Football Industry

Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to investigate issues arising from the accounting policies and disclosure adopted by football clubs. The chapter considers the nature and purpose of financial statements and their relevance to football clubs, before analysing significant accounting policies adopted by clubs in respect of vital items such as player costs and stadium investment. Weaknesses of the financial reporting model as it relates to football clubs will be discussed. It should be noted, however, that this chapter is not intended to be survey of significant accounting policies adopted by football clubs. This task is already carried out thoroughly for English clubs by Deloitte & Touche in its excellent and comprehensive Annual Reviews of Football Finance1 and in a more limited form for Scottish clubs by Price Waterhouse in its Financial Review of Scottish Football.2
