Abstract

Many of the premises underlying the study of postwar Japan’s economic system, now thought of as appropriate common ground, are ill-defined and untested. They are thought to be so obvious that few notice the need for testing.1 How the flow of funds within an economy influences its performance is one example.2 Two untested views address this question: (1) that the government can control the economy and improve macroeconomic performance by intervention in the flow of funds; (2) that the existence of a stable pipe for finance — a pipe through which funds are supplied stably in any conditions — decisively influences the performance and growth of a firm.
