Abstract

Kankantrie (a major cotton tree growing in the Amazon forest) stood proud and mighty, as she had done for the longest time. She was well aware of her reputation as “God of the forest,” and expected nothing but utmost respect from all vegetation around. She had been praised in many songs, and revered by the Maroon and indigenous tribes, who had built their villages near the rivers in the South American interior. Kankantrie was literally the highest tree in the forest. When Winti, the North East Passat, would blow, her branches would wave with grace, and when the major rains would fall, she would serve as a shelter to flying and walking animals alike.
