Abstract

From the painstakingly edited pages of textbook manuscripts and peerreviewed journals of social theorists to the ‘best-sellers’ of management development consultants, leadership studies is in a constant state of evolution. Nevertheless, the subject of leadership development is one that has remained essentially ambiguous. That this situation may have arisen from an earlier ambiguity surrounding the question of leadership and its meaning is a possibility. Indeed, Stogdill (1974) observed that there were almost as many definitions as there were persons that had attempted to define the seemingly elusive concept of leadership.
