Health and Globalization: A Case Study of Russia’s Response to HIV/AIDS

Abstract

Quite contrary to gloomy predictions about a demographic crisis due to HIV/AIDS, Russia has significantly reduced the number of HIV/AIDS positive and is prepared to share in world health protection. Instead of being on receiving end as it was in 1990s, Russia has become a donor to multilateral work in global health (Moscow Times, 2010a), its contribution to boosting the international health system from 2006 to 2011 exceeds $430 million. This was made clear by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in his statement to the 60th session of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Regional Committee for Europe in Moscow — the first time Russia had hosted a WHO forum of such importance. He pledged that Russia would go ahead with fighting infectious diseases on a global scale, first of all by giving a hand to the CIS states.
