Abstract

It has long been recognized that one of the leading causes of death and ill health conditions can be attributed to controllable ‘lifestyle’ or behavioral risks factors (Donaldson and Blanchard 1995). Factors such as obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, and alcohol consumption have been implicated in the increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), one of the major causes of death in the UK. As jobs have tended to become more sedentary, most adults no longer achieve the adequate levels of physical activity essential to maintain fitness and the recommended body mass index (BMI).
