Abstract

From 1995 to 2007 the Spanish economy enjoyed one of the longest periods of economic growth in recent decades, with an average growth rate of 3.7 per cent higher than in the majority of the economies in the European Union (EU). Total population also grew more in Spain during this period than in other countries, because of massive immigration flows. But despite population growth, as discussed in Chapter 1, economic growth was compatible with per capita income convergence, since Spain reduced the gap with the European average by 8 points.
