Abstract

Oil giant Shell was a pioneer of scenario planning, but Shell UK Chairman James Smith, a FTSE 100 Cross-Company Mentoring Programme mentor (see page 45 for Smith’s views on post-crisis leadership), has no illusions about the relationship between the scenarios that Shell examines and how things actually turn out. I have suggested somewhat mischievously that scenarios are simply sophisticated ways of saying that you have no idea what’s going to happen in the future. But you do get a variety of pictures, which maybe helps you to prepare better for the future. At some point, however, you have to say “I think the world’s heading this way and that’s where I’m going to put my efforts.”
