Abstract

The difficulties of containing the social effects of the financial crisis in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) shed unprecedented light on the nature of Eastern European social models. Indeed, a number of factors in these new European member states raise questions about the efficacy with which their social welfare programmes, labour market regulations and industrial relations systems can provide institutional solutions that can soften social trauma or manage an exit from the crisis.
