Abstract

The Greek system of governance is based on the principle of separation of powers and the state therefore has three branches: the legislature, the executive and the judiciary (Panezi, 2008). The legislative branch consists of the parliament and the President of the Republic, with the main legislative power assigned to parliament. The executive branch consists of the government (Prime Minister and ministers) and the President of the Republic. It is important to note that it is the government and not the President of the Republic that is politically accountable. The judicial branch relates to courts, and these are divided into administrative, civil and criminal courts.
